"Now I got me a world full of 'YES"!
In roaring twenties Chicago, Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband, Amos, to take the rap... until he finds out he's been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another "Merry Murderess," Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the "American Dream": fame, fortune, and acquittal.
"Chicago" has always been one of my absolute favourite shows. The Academy Award Winning film version premiered when I was 16 years old and I was obsessed. I have been fortunate enough to see the show live a few times and have never been disappointed. The strong female characters, the 1920's sounds of ragtime and blues, the elaborate stories of these women turning murder into "art" in order to make it big has always struck a chord with me; plus- poor, sweet Amos!
When we began discussing our musical options for 2023, Mr. Ellis and I weren't inspired by our show options. We kept coming back to "Chicago" as a favourite and research led us to find the Teen Edition we produced this year. I pitched the idea of a stage-within-a-stage to illustrate each characters desire to be in the spotlight at some point in their respective careers, marriage or trials. Then we thought to let the music and dancing carry the show and use minimalistic props and sets- I mean it is Ebb & Fosse...
Our Leads and Ensemble members have spent their evenings, lunch hours and free time rehearsing to bring this show to the stage in just 12 weeks. Whether they are playing a lawyer, murderess, speak-easy goer or reporter there has been no shortage of fun while preparing this production for you. In addition to our hard working students, we have been fortunate to have Alberta Dance + Drama Academy on board again to support additional choreography, under the guidance of Ms. Erica Hendry.
Special thanks to my wonderfully supportive family and friends. Many thanks to my absolutely amazing and talented students and, thank you to YOU for supporting our school, and our program. Please Enjoy "Chicago"!
Jessica Kelly
As always it has been an absolute pleasure working with students on the vocal and technical side of our musical production. Musicals are complex in rhythm, harmonies, and key changes, and require so many students to step out of their comfort zone and learn something new, from choreography to building sets and lighting design, to vocal work and blocking, and all challenges have been well met by our students.
First I need to thank my incredible family, Andrea, Parker, and Maisie. Their support of this program was consistently shown through their understanding of my extra hours spent at work. Thank you to Jessica Kelly, our artistic director, who's time, expertise, and dedication have led to another incredible production. Thank you to Alberta Dance and Drama Academy for supporting four of our numbers under the guidance of Erica Hendry.
Thank you to our administrators and colleagues, the AHSFA Society, and parent volunteers.
Finally, I must thank our incredible students. We do these musicals both for and with the students and it brings me joy and pride knowing that our school is producing knowledgeable and talented performers who regularly demonstrate high levels personal pride and responsibility. Thank you for giving me yet another incredible experience and I look forward to seeing what we accomplish next year.
Matthew Ellis

To our talented students, both on and off stage, your talent and passion are evident, and we are so grateful that you share your gifts with our community.
We value the Arts. Arts programs nurture and develop students in so many ways and we recognize these extraordinary transferrable skills, which are nurtured through Alberta High School of Fine Arts. By supporting the Arts programs, you are encouraging students to take risks and discover their potential. Theatre productions are vital to the essence of who we are at AHSFA.

Erica Hendry is the Owner and Artistic Director of Alberta Dance Academy. This is her seventeeth year as owner, the company’s thirty-second season, and Erica's third musical as guest choreographer for AHSFA. Erica enjoys studying many dance forms such as Acro, Contemporary, Jazz, Lyrical, Tap, West African, and Musical Theatre. She received her Bachelor of Arts from The University of Calgary: A Collaborative Degree in Contemporary Dance and Kinesiology. Additionally, Erica has studied on Broadway at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) and Broadway Dance Centre in New York; In Calgary at the School of Decidedly Jazz DanceWorks, and in Guinea, West Africa with Ballet Matam.
We at AHSFA are incredibly thankful for the partnership we have with AD&DA and the level of professionalism Erica adds to our productions. Every minute of choreo on stage takes over one hour of preparation, and then another hour to teach. The time that Erica and AD&DA has donated to our program over the last four musicals is immense and our gratitude is immeasurable. Thank you Erica!
